Discuss contemporary principles and approaches in the quality teaching of writing to school students
Effective writing is a complex art that needs to be at the heart of every aspiring writer. It makes you convey your message with much clarity and ease to the perceived audience that one intends to reach.
Last summer I got the privilege of tutoring aspiring students to become an accomplished writer. There are three approaches that are key to this subject. The Product approach, the Process approach, finally the Genre-based approach. In the product approach as (Christmas,2011, p.1) suggested, aspiring writers were expected to be competent in various modes of written communication through the process of construction and deconstruction of model text. this approach place emphasis on the end product rather than on the acquisition of skills, it proved to be a bit problematic for the students to understand
The process approaches. It involved various aspect of writing such as planning, revising the document editing and even drafting. This was well received by the students as most of them had done it before in their work. The genre-based approach. I taught the students on the ways to write with the audience in mind.
Explains and justify key approaches that could adopt for teaching writing.
Collectively, these approaches entail, independent writing, guidance approach, interactive modeling and shared writing. Seifoori, Mozaheb & Beigi, (2012). Through modeled writing approach the instructor create, writes, and think aloud as he/she explains the strategies used. This helps the students to incorporate new writing genres in their writing and also the relevant skill needed. Shared approach mode of teaching focuses more on the students’ ability to visualize and generate ideas and put these ideas into their pieces of work to woo their audience. Shared approach brings ideas to life thereby growing the students’ ability to think. Hout, (2011).
Interactive mode of teaching puts emphasis on guiding the student to create paragraphs and sentences correctly through one on one conversations. Lastly, guided mode of teaching involves grouping the students with similar writing needs together and address their issues at once. This not only saves time for both the teacher side and the students but it also brings about goal setting and corporation amongst the students. Kalantzis & Cope (2014).
