News writing is nothing like writing a sonnet, or the next great American novel. It is rather doing emergency surgery on information you have to be precise, fast and there is no space of flowering words. It is like literary minimalism but with an ultimate deadline that may portray ulcers.
Disregard all that you know about creating tension. News stories are written in an inverted pyramid format: the most important stuff at the beginning, the supporting arguments then, and the background at the end. It is just like giving the punchline and then telling why the thing is funny. Counterintuitive? Yes. Effective? Absolutely.
Your lead sentence should be like one of those pick-up lines in the dating game: it must get readers to pause and read. What is the use of breaking news when no one will stop to read it? An effective lead would give answers of the most vital questions in 25-35 words. It is economy in speech as pure as it can get.
Every news story must answer six fundamental questions:
Consider these your journalistic GPS – other wise your readers are lost in a jungle of pileup.
The latest news, sensational news, politics, crime. Such stories can not stay unreported and require clear presentation. No time for creative metaphors about the mayor’s tax policy resembling a Shakespearean tragedy.
The culture of entertainment, human interest articles, columns. These permit a bit more personality so long as they are factually accurate. You can be creative, but not fictional.
Longer, more detailed pieces that explore topics in depth. Consider them as hard news that went to therapy and learned to unleash their emotions.
“According to sources” isn’t attribution—it’s lazy journalism. Wherever you can, name your sources. Unless you can name them, give the reason why. Only when the story so necessitates, they should use the so called anonymous sources.
Never begin with “There was” or “It was”–these are lame and wasteful commencements. Don’t use such adverbs as “allegedly” where they do not go, and never forget that “affect” is a verb, not a noun (although everyone on LinkedIn seems to think this is the opposite).

Good journalism tells; great journalism tells with clarity. Learn the fundamentals, don’t waste your reader’s time, and be clear rather than clever every time.

The Verona Voice — Volume XVII, Issue 198
Monday, July 9, 1595
By Leona Quill, Verona Voice Staff Reporter
Verona, Italy — The city awoke in stunned silence this morning as news spread of the deaths of Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, young heirs of Verona’s most powerful—and bitterly feuding—families. The lifeless bodies of the two lovers were discovered yesterday at dawn in the Capulet family tomb.
According to witnesses, the Capulet crypt was a scene of silent mourning prior to the police officer discovering Romeo, who was thought to have died of poison, and Juliet, who had supposedly been dead several days, in the same bed-but somehow rose to kill herself with a dagger.
The exact details are still unclear, but according to preliminary reports, a secret marriage, a failed plot and centuries-old hatred of a very young couple caused the outcome.
“I saw them both, cold as marble, in each other’s arms,” said Benvolio, cousin to Romeo, outside the Capulet estate. “If only this feud hadn’t poisoned their love.”
Montague and Capulet are families that have a violent feud that dates back over decades. Only a few days ago Verona streets turned red, as one more fight between the two families took place. Mercutio, a friend to Romeo, and Tybalt Capulet who was the cousin to Juliet lost their lives in this latest riot.
The deaths sparked a chain reaction. Romeo, who murdered Tybalt in revenge and was sent into exile, left the city but went back incognito after learning that Juliet was “dead”.
“Romeo thought Juliet was gone forever,” said Friar Laurence, the priest who allegedly married the two in secret. “Had he known the truth… things might have ended differently.”
When asked to clarify his role in the events, Friar Laurence responded nervously, “I—I knew little of their plans beyond spiritual guidance. Their decisions were their own.”
WHO: Teenagers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet belong to opposing noble houses
WHAT: Both found dead in the Capulet tomb
WHEN: Discovered at dawn, Sunday morning, July 8
WHERE: Capulet family crypt, Verona
HOW: Romeo died by poison; Juliet by self-inflicted wound
Following the tragedy, both Lord Montague and Lord Capulet appeared at the tomb in sorrow. The two reportedly shook hands, vowing to end the feud that led to their children’s demise.
“We are enemies no more,” said Lord Capulet, tears in his eyes. “Their affection shall not be a memory but a monument.”
Verona is in mourning, bells are ringing in all the churches, the people are pouring into the square. The mayor has declared three days of silence and reflection.
This star-crossed lovers’ story seems to have turned into a brokenhearted tale, but their history has sparked a thread of hope that somehow brought peace to a long-divided city.
