ROCK SAMPLE PREPARATION LAB REPORT 3
Experiment #1
Rock Sample Preparation Lab Report.
Objectives:
Preparing the rock sample specimens.
Introduction.
The goal of the lab preparation is to give an accurate representative rock samples that can
be used in other steps of the similar protocol. Kisch (1991, p 665-670), notes that these samples
are prepared following the applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the laboratory
Standard Operating Procedures. The information used in the SOPs is provided by the field
sample preparation, the objectives provided in the applicable planning docs, and the sample
screening activities. The lab test procedure is comprised of Coring, cutting, grinding, and
measuring the dimensional conformity of the core specimens.
Apparatus.
A measured rock block, 100 cm ruler, a complete geometrical set, a stop watch (for timing), a
marker pen, a note pad, light source, a right angled tool, glass protector, water supply system, the
Coring machine, clamping device, weighing machine, metal –based jig, magnetic based grinding
machine, grinding fluid, a V-block, and a dial gauge.
Individual Protective Equipment.
ROCK SAMPLE PREPARATION LAB REPORT 4
The recommended individual safety equipment are safety goggles, a protective cover all
or apron, a respiratory mask, earplugs, safety gloves ( which should be clean), and steel toe-
working boots.
General procedures.
The following section discusses the general procures for coring of the rock specimens,
the procedure for cutting the specimens, the general grinding procedure of the core specimens,
and the procedure for measuring the dimensional conformity of the prepared rock samples.

Measure Dimensional Conformance
Figure 1
Coring Process.
i. Place the weighed rock block on a dedicated platform of the Coring machine.
ii. Lock the position of the rock block carefully by tightening all the bolts around the
Coring machine. It is important to ensure that all the bolts are tight before
proceeding to the next step.
ROCK SAMPLE PREPARATION LAB REPORT 5
iii. Install the core bit. Depending on the specific laboratory Standard Operating
Procedures, one sample can be used at a time.
iv. Locate the core bit to its rightful position.
v. Lock the Coring machine system. This step should be done slowly and carefully
to ensure the system is tightly locked.
vi. Turn on the water supply and immediately start the Coring machine. A stopwatch
is very important at this stage.
vii. Allow the water to run for some time, like 10-15 minutes and then the water
supply is turned off.
viii. Unlock the system when it is done and take out the core specimen.
The Cutting Process.
i. Measure and mark the intended core rock using a straight ruler, for instance, the
100-centimeter ruler before cutting it.
ii. Place the core specimen at the clamping device.
iii. Tighten the knobs of the clamping device carefully. A glass protector should be
placed in front of the rotating blade and the hands moved away from it.
iv. Allow the rotating blade to rotate for some minutes.
v. Open the water supply to cool down the core sample specimen. Care must be
taken as this is done slowly and smoothly.
The Grinding Process.
i. Place the rock sample specimen at the metal-based jig.
ROCK SAMPLE PREPARATION LAB REPORT 6
ii. Tighten the metal-based jig. The tightening can be enforced by the tightening
bolts.
iii. Place the metal-based jig on the magnetic base of the grinding machine.
iv. Turn on the power buttons of the grinding machine. Also turn on the magnetic
field source and the grinding fluid pump.
v. While the core specimen is being ground, use the grinding fluid to enhance the
lubrication and to give core specimen a cooling effect. The same procedure is
applied to the other surface.
Dimensional Conformation.
i. To ensure the sides of the rock sample are straight, draw three lines on its side
surface.
ii. Use a protractor or a pair of compass to ensure that lines exactly 120 degrees
apart from each other.
iii. Place the rock specimen on a V-block.
iv. Place the dial gauge to be in contact with the side surface of the rock sample.
v. Observe and note down the dial reading while moving the rock specimen from
one end to another end.
vi. Repeat the same procedure at list three times to get the accurate reading.
vii. To measure the core flatness, draw two diameter lines which are perpendicular to
each other.
viii. Place mark points after every 3 mm across the diameter.
ROCK SAMPLE PREPARATION LAB REPORT 7
ix. Place the core specimen vertically, and place the dial gauge in contact the surface
end.
x. Note down the dial readings for every marked point. The same procedure is
applied to the other end surface and to the other specimens.
xi. For the specimen’s perpendicularity, place a right-angled tool on the edge of the
sample specimen.
xii. Hold the specimen facing the light and ensure that no gap is left between the tool
used and the rock sample specimen.
Results.
Since the procedure was followed carefully, the rock sample specimen was authentic.
Conclusion and Recommendations.
This process is the best as it provides the most authentic samples to be used in other
protocols. However, the rock samples to be used must be very strong to withstand the stress
imposed to it while in the Coring machine.
